What to know about Bryce Young’s chances to start in Week 8

LANDOVER, Md. –  Carolina Panthers head coach Dave Canales isn’t going to reinsert Bryce Young as starting quarterback despite the team riding a four-game losing streak.

Canales announced after Carolina’s blowout 40-7 loss to the Washington Commanders that Andy Dalton will start Week 8 when the team travels to Denver to face the Broncos.

“We got to get prepared,” Canales said postgame. “We got to look at this film, get ready for the Broncos right now, and Andy will be playing next week.”

Dalton had a lackluster performance in Carolina’s 33-point loss that dropped the team to 1-6. The quarterback threw for just 93 yards and tossed two interceptions. His 44.0 passer rating was his worst as a starter this season.

Dalton was just part of a listless performance from the entire squad. The Panthers defense allowed 421 total yards, including 214 rushing yards to a Commanders team that played without quarterback Jayden Daniels for most of the game.

“We have to put this behind us. But we have to look ourselves in the mirror and say, ‘alright, why do these games keep going like this?’ I think that’s the biggest thing,’ Dalton said. ‘For us, there are some many little details that we are gonna go back and look at and we’re gonna say we have to have certain things happen.

‘We have to make sure we have a good understanding of everything that we’re doing. When you don’t, it turns out like it did (Sunday). We have to be honest and real and everybody has to do it. And I’m talking to myself, too.”

Young checked into the contest with under five minutes remaining in the fourth quarter in garbage time. Young, the 2023 No. 1 overall pick, was demoted after Week 2.
